The history of Elba begins with mythological legends and continues with the Etruscans whom exploited the island for her wealth of iron until they were expelled by the Romans.
Huge forts were built during the period of the important Tuscan Medici family as a defence against terrible pirates and the famous French Emperor Napoleon was exiled here.
