Wine weekend in Bergamo northeast of Milan

Bergamo is a charming town located around one hour northeast of Milan and just below the Alps. The original town was built on a hilltop and were protected by strong city walls that still exist. Nowadays it’s called Bergamo Alta (upper town) and is nearly completely free from traffic. It’s really nice to stroll around among the charming streets and squares with its ancient palaces and nice little shops. The newer part, Bergamo Bassa (lower town), with its wide boulevards were built in the beginning of the 1900. The upper and lower parts can easily be reached with the city’s cable railway.

Enjoy charming Bergamo and the excellant wines of Valcalepio and Franciacorta during a nice getaway!

Program proposal for a minimum of 8 persons:

Accommodation for 2 nights in a nice 4 star hotel in the centre of Bergamo Bassa.
Full day wine tour with private minibus to the winelands of  Valcalepio and Franciacorta. The tour starts from the hotel with a minibus and after a 20 minutes drive we will arrive to a small village in  the wine district Valcalepio where we will visit the beatiful wine castle.  On the same site there was a medieval castle from the 13th century and one of the old towers is still intact. The castle has a long tradition of wine production and after a tour at the winery, it’s time to visit the wine cellar. We will taste four of the  excellant wines.
Before lunch the tour continues to the beautiful Lake Iseo where the fishermen still have an important role in the local gastronomy. Lunch at a nice trattoria.
Just south of the lake there is another wine district, the famous Franciacorta, and here are produced some om Italy’s best sparkling wines, often compared with the French champagne.
We visit a winery owned by the same family since the 18th century that for generations has produced Franciacorta wines with great passion. The family has also collected old tools and objects once used in the wine production in a  wine museum. We will taste the sparkling Franciacorta DOCG Brut, a white wine and a red wine.
The trip back to Bergamo will take around half an hour.
On request it’s possible to have an English speaking tour leader during the trip.
