Cherry tour to Apulia with art, food and wine!

In the lovely month of June we will experience some days of culinary delights, art and history in this wonderful and typical southern part of Italy.
Apulia is located in the southeastern part of the Italian peninsula or the “heel” that this part popularly is called. Different cultures have been mixed through millenniums. The thousand of years old local culture with the Roman and Greek. In Bari ended the Via Appia Antica “Regina viarum (” Queen of roads “) that started to be built in 300 BC by the Romans to connect Rome with Bari.
Tourism has become an important source of income also in Apulia but the region has maintained its authentic atmosphere in the many charming towns where time seems to stay still and offers a fantastic local cuisine full of genuin flavours.

Friday: Arrival to Brindisi

The tour start from Lecce and the neBrindisi portoarest airport is Brindisi. There are local buses to Lecce with various departures during the day and it takes around 40 minutes to travel. From the buss terminal you can then easily take a taxi to the hotel.
In the evening you will meet the tour leader and the other guests during the welcome drink and dinner in the hotel. 

Saturday: Lecce – Otranto

Breakfast and tour of the cLecceity of Lecce, the Baroque Capital, with a local guide. Visit to the old town and its monuments: the Santa Croce Basilica, Piazza del Duomo, the Roman amphitheater and a stop in a shop of paper mache. In those typical handicraft workshops you can see the faces of famous people like presidents, politicians, soccer players, etc. in paper mache that has a long tradition in South Italy.
Lunch with local specialties in a restaurant before we continue by bus to Otranto, the easternmost city of Italy founded by the Greeks.

At Otranto a local guide will show us the Cathedral of the Martyrs with its famous mosaic floor from 1163 representing the Tree of Life.   We will pass by various interesting monuments as the Aragon’s Castle first built in the 11th Cent. but destroyed and rebuilt the last time in the end of the 15th Cent. after the “Battle of Otranto” when large parts of South Italy was attacked by the Turks. Otranto suffered heavy human losses and when at last the Turks forced the city gates and entered the cityOtranto they killed 800 residents that refused to renounce their Christian faith. The 800 executed’s skulls are conserved behind a grid in the Cathedral. The castle was named after the Spanish Aragonese family that built the fortification up again.
We continue our walk in the charming whitewashed city so typical for Apulia.
Return to Lecce and dinner on your own.

Sunday: Gallipoli – Winery

Departure in bus to Gallipoli for a guided visit of the old town, once an island, now connected to the mainland by a sixteenth century bridge.  In the past the city was constantly exposed to attacks, both from the sea and the countryside, and a drawbridge was installed but removed in later restorations. The city has a beautiful cathedral dedicated to Sant’Agata and the ancient olive oil press, “Frantoio Ipogeo”, witness about the importance of the Apulia’s “green gold” that
reached all the major ports in Europe from Gallipoli.

Transfer to a famous winery from 1500, producer of some of the best wines of the area. We do a wine tasting with 3 of the wines together with a light lunch in the wine cellar. Back to Lecce and the rest of the day free.

Monday: Cherry picking

At last the day has come when we can devote ourselvekörsbär 2s to this wonderful good fruit! Departure by bus to a typical farmhouse “masseria” surrounded by olive trees and 250 cherry trees. We will all participate in picking the delicious cherries and the participants have the possibility to buy the harvest. Lunch with traditional peasant dishes. 
In the afternoon we will do a special cooking class with cherries! We will use a stone oven and if we have time enough we will also do some cherry marmalade.
In the evening a typical good bye dinner with Pizzica show, an ancient dance of the southern part of Apulia. You are free to join the dancers at the sound of guitar and tambourine!

Tuesday: Departure

It’s time to think about your departure and head back to Brindisi’s airport.

The tour will be confirmed with a minimum of 15 paying participants (from various countries). 

Flight tickets are not included and has to be booked directly by the participants. Example of airlines with flights to Brindisi: Ryanair, KLM-Eurowings-Air Berlin. It’s also possible to fly to Bari with a somewhat longer transfer to Lecce. 

If you are a larger group (minimum 10 people) we can organize a separate trip on desired dates and with the possibility to customize the program. 

You have to sign your own travel insurance.
